"Taking Poetry to the Street"; First-Ever Washington, DC Poetry Street Festival features Poet Sistah Joy presenting Children's Poetry Workshop


March 25, 2004 -- Washington, DC will kick off one of its most aggressive Poetry events ever for National Poetry Month. On Saturday, April 3, 2004, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library will block of its street to present the first ever Poetry Street Festival, "Taking Poetry To The Street".

Festival hours are 11am until 4pm. The festival will take place at the MLK Memorial, Jr. Library on G St., (street will be blocked off between 9th & 10th). The festival is free.

Sistah Joy, author of Lord, I'm Dancin' As Fast As I Can and founder of Collective Voises, will host a workshop for young children (ages 4 - 7) from 11am until 1pm, along with 3 other poets. Children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbor's children are encouraged to attend with their parents for this family-fun-filled event!

Among the many local acclaimed featured poets, musicians, and spoken word artists, Sistah Joy was recently appointed as the Minister of Poetry at Ebenezer AME CHurch, Fort Washington, MD and has presented her poetry for Nelson Mandela, Hillary Clinton, and John Conyers. Alford has performed on stages with Nikki Giovanni, Delores Kendrick, E. Ethelbert Miller, Eloise Greenfield, and Haki R. Madhubuti. The festival will feature notable guests and presenters, including radio show hosts, celebrated personalities, and a variety of artisans. There will be activities for all ages throughout the festival.
